MDI Hospital Acquires Toshiba Ultrasound to Enable Safe and Less Invasive Exams

Aplio 500 Platinum’s Shear Wave Elastography Helps MDI Hospital Reduce Invasive Procedures and Improve Patient Care

To perform more non-invasive exams with industry-leading depth and detail, Mount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital acquired the Aplio™ 500 Platinum ultrasound system from Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. MDI Hospital, based in Bar Harbor, Maine, is leveraging the Aplio 500 Platinum ultrasound system’s advanced visualization technology, including Shear Wave elastography, to measure liver tissue elasticity and help diagnose patients presenting with Hepatitis C.

“We needed an ultrasound system with superior image quality that would give MDI Hospital a competitive edge in the surrounding area and offer our clinicians the information needed to help make the right diagnosis on all patients, every time,” said Dr. John Benson, director, Medical Imaging, MDI Hospital. “The Aplio 500 Platinum provides clear images that allow our staff to visualize anatomy using ultrasound to reduce invasive procedures, which helps improve patient care. Toshiba also offers us the most personal attention. We have access to local Toshiba service staff that monitors our system to reduce system downtime, along with education and training for our sonographers.”

Toshiba’s Aplio 500 Platinum combines advanced visualization technology, workflow automation tools and superior ergonomics to reduce operator steps and fatigue. The system features powerful clinical imaging tools, including Shear Wave elastography, which enables MDI Hospital to non-invasively measure tissue stiffness of the liver. Superb Micro-Vascular Imaging (SMI) allows clinicians to see small blood vessels and visualize low-velocity microvascular blood flow without the need for radiologic contrast agents or more invasive modalities, while MicroPure™ enables better visualization of breast microcalcifications compared to gray scale imaging. The Aplio 500 Platinum also includes Toshiba’s iStyle™ Productivity Suite, an adaptable user interface, delivering workflow automation tools for more efficient and precise exams.

“The Aplio 500 Platinum expands the clinical utility of ultrasound and helps give clinicians a more worry-free experience so they can focus on what matters most, patient care,” said Maria Piazza, director, Ultrasound Business Unit, Toshiba. “The advanced image quality of the Aplio 500 Platinum gives providers, like MDI Hospital, a high level of visualization and clarity, allowing clinicians to offer safe, less invasive and more cost-effective care to its patients.”
